When the father of the Chicago Black Hawks’ general manager died, the team was on a long six game road streak. During this stretch, the Hawks had a 3 day break and the players could finally get some well earned rest in their own beds. Their plane took off after their game in Toronto, but the Black Hawks were not on board. The team had made a decision that they would go to the funeral of their general manager’s father. So the team rented two busses, and took off. When asked about why they did it, a player answered “any hockey team would do it.” Why is it that any scandal by a football player 1000 miles away makes the front page but this noble act by these players isn’t even mentioned in the Chicago newspapers? The news must not want heroes any more. They prefer villains. It must not be exiting to hear heart warming stories about players of the greatest sport on and of the ice.
